xFoundry@UMD Showcase at AI Expo for National Competitiveness: Empowering Tomorrow's Entrepreneurs

xFoundry@UMD, a new cutting-edge entrepreneurship program at the University of Maryland, identifies industry challenges, matches them with investors and users, and presents them to students in a 15-month competition.

Teams of up to 12 students from diverse disciplines across campus will design solutions to these grand challenges and compete to launch a venture. They will be judged on technical skills, teamwork, and business plans while receiving credit toward their degree, micro-credentials, and resume-building opportunities. The winning team will become the product team of a company designed around their solution, with founders' shares, a salary, and a prize ranging between $250k-$2M for initial investment, along with experienced CXOs for the first 18 months.

Our program is designed to integrate AI at every step. It is the first experiential learning program at the University of Maryland that gives students the ability to utilize industry-standard AI solutions to build on them to solve complex problems while still in school, earning credits along the way. xFoundry offers students an extensive ecosystem of resources, allowing them to access AI-powered tools to assist with their teams' marketing and content development needs.

xFoundry provides students with AI-based digital mapping tools, access to cutting-edge AI algorithms and pre-trained models, and edge computing equipment for on-site image recognition. AI will be incorporated into the solutions students are designing for the 2025 School Safety Competition as they work toward building an automated solution that will rapidly detect and notify of school shooting events for K-12 schools and colleges. In addition, the Crossfire team participating in the $11M XPRIZE Wildfire competition is working with xFoundry to leverage AI to develop the first fully autonomous detection, tracking, and suppression system for incipient wildfires as they work to advance new technologies that can rapidly and accurately detect, characterize, and respond to wildfires before they become destructive.

xFoundry will share its mission and AI goals at this year's AI Expo for National Competitiveness at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Tuesday, May 7, and Wednesday, May 8. The Expo will allow xFoundry to connect with leading AI experts in both the private sector and government.

xFoundry's Associate Director of Ventures and Partnerships, Phillip Alvarez, Ph.D., will present on xFoundry: AI-Enabled Experiential Learning in Universities on Tuesday, May 7, from 2:00 pm- 2:30 pm in the Talent Marketplace.
